Wallowa County is known for the Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America. Even deeper than the Grand Canyon. The Hells Canyon area has been turned into the Hells Canyon National Recreation area and is one of the most rugged places on the face of the earth. But it was here that the worst incident of violence against Chinese in Oregon took place. In 1887, cattle rustler outlaws shot and killed 34 Chinese gold miners, with-in the canyon. This was known as the Chinese Massacre. The gold found in the canyon is mostly small particles, and was never seen as profitable by the white man. Near the mouth of the Imnaha River, there was some hard rock gold mining efforts made, but the area proved unprofitable.
