Most of the Oregon gold from this area comes from the Horse Heaven mercury mining area of rugged rolling hills. Northeast of Ashwood by 3 miles is the Oregon King Mine, which produced around 3,000 ounces of gold as a by-product of copper, lead and silver ores. Further east, around Axhandle Butte, there were numerous prospects.
